The School of Marxism is a secondary teaching and research unit at the Shanghai University of Engineering Science. It consists of five teaching and research sections and offers all domestic undergraduates and postgraduates ideological and political theory courses and general education courses. It also has many interdisciplinary research platforms, such as ‘Shanghai Research Centre for Strategic Emerging Industries Competitiveness’—one of soft scientific bases of Science & Technology Commission Shanghai Municipality, ‘The Research Centre for Family Development and Women’s Rights and Interests Protection’ affiliated to Shanghai Women Federation, ‘The Network Governance and Network Security Research Office’ of Shanghai Universities, ‘The Research Centre for Socialist Theory with Chinese Characteristics’, ‘The Research Centre for Contemporary Chinese Marxism’, ‘The Young Marxists Development Centre’, and ‘The Research Centre for Governance Modernization with Chinese Characteristics’.

Currently, the School has fifty full-time faculty members, including five professors and ten associate professors. 75% of them have doctoral degrees and 35% of them have overseas study and work experience. There are two faculty members with the title of ‘Top Young and Middle-aged Talents of Shanghai Marxist Theory Discipline’, six with the title of ‘Sunshine Scholars of Shanghai’, one with the title of ‘The Excellent Ideological and Political Course Teacher of Shanghai’, and two with the title of ‘Excellent Teacher of National University Ideological and Political Theory Courses’. They have also been awarded one special prize of the First National University Ideological and Political Theory Teaching Exhibition, one Grand Prize of Shanghai Ideological and Political Courses Teaching Exhibition, and the title of ‘Shanghai Yucai awards’ six times.

The School adheres to the combination of theory and practice, focuses on the major strategic issues concerning the development of China and Shanghai, and gives full play to the theoretical advantages of Marxism. In the past five years, the School has undertaken eleven research programmes sponsored by National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation of China, thirteen research programmes sponsored by the Ministry of Education, and fourteen research programmes sponsored by Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Foundation. The School also has undertaken more than fifty decision-making consulting projects sponsored by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and its Ministries. Many of them have been adopted or approved, and have made outstanding contributions to society.
